Grogarry Lodge is an exclusive Hebridean retreat providing an island experience that’s hard to beat. Let on an exclusive use basis, the Lodge provides serviced accommodation for up to sixteen guests in eight bedrooms, with wildfowling, stalking, hill walking and some of the best salmon, sea trout and brown trout fishing in Europe included in the package. For further information please visit www.grogarrylodge.com.
Some of the finest wild brown trout, sea trout and salmon fishing around is on the doorstep. The burns and lochs are not stocked and the lack of fish farms in the western watershed of the islands has kept the gene pool pure. With 15% of the UK freshwater surface area on the islands there is plenty of choice for the keen fly fisherman, from sandy machair lochs to peaty hill lochs a good hour’s walk into the hills. Salmon and sea trout up to 10lbs are caught regularly and hard fighting brown trout are a particular attraction in the machair lochs. Fishing permits for all fishing on the Estate are available from the Stòras Uibhist office. Further information on where and how to fish the waters of Stòras Uibhist can be found at www.southuistfishing.com.
Mixed sporting weeks are available during the summer and into autumn, with wildfowling and stalking complementing the fishing. All sporting activities are organised by the dedicated game-keeping staff who actively manage the health and size of the wild deer herd and bird flocks to ensure they are healthy and sustainable and impact as little as possible on the crofting activities of the community. Guests at Grogarry Lodge (www.grogarrylodge.com) take precedence for shooting activity, though when available outside parties can participate in wildfowling and stalking.
Askernish Golf Club (www.askernishgolfclub.com ), a Community Interest Company, is a tenant of Stòras Uibhist and all surpluses generated by the Club will be returned to Stòras Uibhist for re-investment on other projects that will benefit the community. With funding from LEADER and HIE, Storas Uibhist employs the Askernish Development Manager whose remit is to increase golf visitors and to market the Estate area as a tourism destination.
Stòras Uibhist is working towards developing the South Uist Estate as an exceptional tourism destination. 2011 saw The Outer Hebrides rated as amongst the World’s Top 100 Travel Experiences by Wanderlust Magazine. The tourism assets within the South Uist Estate – from loch fishing, golf, and most of all the exceptional landscape – make the islands’ potential near-unrivalled in the UK.
