Stòras Uibhist is a company limited by guarantee that purchased the shares of South Uist Estates Ltd., on behalf of the local community, from the private syndicate that previously owned it. Funding support for the buyout came from the Scottish Government, HIE, Comhairle nan Eilan Siar, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Big Lottery Fund, among others. Significant funds were also raised locally and through the fundraising efforts of the company Directors and local volunteers.

Previously known as the Long Island Estate and once owned by the notorious Gordon of Cluny, Stòras Uibhist is now managed for and on behalf of the local community. The Directors of the company are democratically elected by the Full Members of the company, who must live in the Estate area.

All surpluses generated by the company will be re-invested to benefit the local economy and social infrastructure of the area.

In addition to the commercial activity undertaken, the Directors and Chief Executive of the company lobby on behalf of the local community for improvement of services and facilities that will benefit the economic and social infrastructure of the islands.

Lochboisdale-Mallaig Ferry Proposal

In January 2008 Stòras Uibhist was asked by Stewart Stevenson, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change, to investigate options for implementing a Lochbosidale-Mallaig Ferry service. The Minister indicated there was up to £1million per year of additional funding available to deliver the service.

On July 21st 2008 a proposal was delivered to the Minister by Angus MacMillan (Chairman) and Huw Francis (Chief Executive), detailing the schedules, costs and revenues for such a service and details of a boat available to operate the route. The proposal required only an additional £650,000 of funding.

The proposal was rejected by the Minister for reasons other than cost and the letter detailing these reasons is available in pdf format below.

To date (January 2009) the MV Claymore is still available to operate the route if a means can be found to do so.
