Over 95% of the Stòras Uibhist landholding is under crofting tenure, including most of the 55,000 acres of hill land on the east side of the island of South Uist.
In additional to collecting croft rents, Stòras Uibhist is legally responsible for carrying out the functions and duties of a landowner. These duties are varied and include responsibility for large parts of the land drainage system, deer management, pest control and administration work relating to croft tenancies, assignations and other land management issues.

Croft Re-letting Policy
There is the potential that the Crofters Commission will declare some crofts on the South Uist Estate area vacant, where there has been no successor appointed to the tenancy, or as a result of the Commission’s absentee initiative.
Storas Uibhist will then be able to re-let the tenancy of the croft and has drafted a policy to do this in a way that will be of most benefit to the local community. The draft policy has been sent to every township clerk for consideration and we are also looking for further comment on the policy and suggestions on how it can be improved from the wider community.

Croft Interest Register
Stòras Uibhist is keen to work with the Crofters Commission to identify available crofts which are not in use and to ensure that these are made available to local people within the South Uist Estate area of Benbecula, Eriskay and South Uist. Stòras Uibhist is encouraging those interested in taking on the tenancy of a croft to complete a registration of interest form so the company can demonstrate demand for crofts from within the community.
Stòras Uibhist does not have the responsibility or power to make or influence individual croft tenancy assignations or absentee removals. However the register will enable us to
-
* identify those seeking crofts
* influence the Crofters Commission in exercising their powers
The register will be used by Stòras Uibhist in discussions with the Crofters Commission and Scottish Government and others as appropriate.
If you wish for your name to be added to the register please complete the form below and return it to the Stòras Uibhist office.
