The Board of Directors of Stòras Uibhist is made up of seven democratically elected Directors and one co-opted Director.

All Directors are non-executive and are elected for a set period and a rolling process of elections to allow for new Directors and re-election of existing Directors is built into the Memorandum and Articles of the company. The Directors are responsible for setting company policy and deciding on the priority development activities.

The Chief Executive was appointed by the Board, is responsible for all day–to-day matters and has full executive responsibility for running the company.

Angus MacMillan - Chairman

Born and brought up in Uist, Angus went to school in Daliburgh and Fort William and continued his formal education in Glasgow. He worked in the pulp and paper industry and the pharmaceutical industry as an industrial engineer before returning to work for the Western Isles Council in Personnel and Management Services. He later joined the Integrated Development Programme for the Western Isles, then branched out on his own into fish farming where he is now MD of an organic salmon producer.

Angus is married to a “Barra girl”, Elizabeth, and has two sons. He is an active crofter with both sheep and cattle.

Fr Michael J. MacDonald – Vice Chairman

Though born and brought up in Fort William, his mother hails from the South Uist township of Askernish. He was educated at the Scots College, Rome and Gregorian University.

Fr Michael is now Parish Priest of Ardkenneth and Bornish Parishes, South Uist.

He has previously been involved in innumerable community projects over the years including Brandane Co-operative Rothesay, Drug Rehabilitation Project Oban, the National Conference of Priests and the Southern Isles Amenity Trust.

David Blaney – Director

A retired bank officer who worked in the finance sector for 20 years, David has been actively involved with different community organisations in the Uists for the last 15 years. He is a local councillor, Treasurer and volunteer with the Citizens’ Advice Bureau; Treasurer of Southend Development Group; Treasurer of Western Isles Guides Association; Board Member of the Hebridean Housing Partnership and Vice Chairman of the Southend Youth Forum.

He is married to Christine and they have five children and one grandchild.

Sarah MacEachen - Director

Sarah was brought up in South Uist and graduated from Aberdeen University with a degree in Gaelic.

After graduation Sarah worked in Inverness before moving to Dublin. She is currently working as a Development Officer for Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig and is based in South Uist.

Sarah comes from a crofting family and can often be seen on the road on Saturdays herding sheep.

John MacMillan - Director

Brought up in Milton in South Uist, one of a family of ten, John returned to Uist after further education on the mainland and worked as a fisherman for a number of years, before joining Western Isles Enterprise as a Community Economic Development Officer. He then joined Comhairle nan Eilean Siar as a Buildings Standards and Housing Grants Officer.

He is married to Fiona and they have one daughter and a son. He is an active crofter.

Martin Matheson - Director

Hailing from a South Uist family, Martin was brought up in Glasgow before moving to the island to live and work in 1983.

He is a Chartered Surveyor working for Argyll and Bute Council and splits his time between home working in South Uist and office time in Argyll.

He has been married to Susan for 20 years and they have two sons and two daughters. He is an active crofter.

George MacAulay - Director

Lorne MacLeod - Director

Lorne was born in Oban, where he now lives, and is a chartered accountant specialising in working with community groups and charities. He was formerly Highlands and Islands Enterprise’s Director of Strengthening Communities, and prior to that was Chief Executive of Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise. He was a board member of the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust for six years, having completed the feasibility study and business plan for the community buyout of the island in 2002. He is presently a director of Caledonian MacBrayne, as well as a director of several businesses based on Skye.

Huw Francis – Chief Executive

Huw Francis was born and grew up in West Wales. He graduated in Engineering from Cranfield University and gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management from Central Connecticut State University.

He has worked in the UK, Hong Kong, Turkey and France, as an engineer, business and marketing consultant and international trade advisor.

Huw is married with three children.
