Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of Stòras Uibhist is made up of seven democratically elected Directors and one appointed Director.

All Directors are non-executive and are elected for a set period and a rolling process of elections to allow for new Directors and re-election of existing Directors is built into the Memorandum and Articles of the company. The Directors are responsible for setting company policy and deciding on the priority development activities.

The Chief Executive was appointed by the Board, is responsible for all day–to-day matters and has full executive responsibility for running the company.

Directors of Stòras Uibhist:

Angus MacMillan – Chairman

    Re-elected in June 2010
Working Groups – Lochboisdale Regeneration, Lochcarnan Community Wind Farm, Communications/PR

Angus was born and brought up in South Uist and has worked in various private and public organisations during the past thirty five years. He has also been involved in voluntary groups in the Uists including Uist 2000 and Storas Uibhist.

His general interests are the advancement of the social, cultural and economic development of these islands.

Angus joined the SnBM Board to fulfil the objectives of the original vision and outcomes of the buy-out feasability study carried out in 2006

John MacMillan – Vice Chairman

    Re-elected in June 2010
Working Groups – Askernish & Tourism, Communications/PR, Estate Management & Crofting, Grogarry

Brought up in Milton in South Uist, one of a family of ten, John returned to Uist after further education on the mainland and worked as a fisherman for a number of years, before joining Western Isles Enterprise as a Community Economic Development Officer. He then joined Comhairle nan Eilean Siar as a Buildings Standards and Housing Grants Officer.

He is married to Fiona and they have one daughter and a son. He is an active crofter.

Sarah MacEachen – Director

    Re-elected in May 2009
Working Groups – Grogarry Lodge, Future Projects

Sarah was brought up in South Uist and returned to live here after spending 10 years away. Following graduation from Aberdeen University with a degree in Gaelic Studies she spent time working in Inverness and Dublin. She is currently working as Curriculum Officer with Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig and is based in South Uist.

Sarah comes from a crofting background and is involved in several local community organisations and can often be heard on BBC Radio nan Gaidheal.

Sarah joined the Board of Stòras Uibhist as she was (and is) acutely aware of the challenges facing the community and sees the community buyout as a significant opportunity to tackle and address these issues.

George MacAulay – Director

    Re-elected in May 2009
Working Groups – Askernish & Tourism

George is a member of Benbecula Community Council and Balivanich crofter.

Lorne MacLeod – Co-opted Director

    Re-appointed June 2011
Working Groups – Lochcarnan Community Wind Farm

Lorne was born in Oban where he now stays, although he previously lived in Skye, Mull, Lochaber, Caithness, and Inverness.

Lorne is a Chartered Accountant specialising in working with charities and community businesses. He is the director of a retail & distribution business based in Skye, and a board member of Cal Mac Ferries Limited.

Lorne was previously the Director of Strengthening Communities at Highlands & Islands Enterprise, and prior to that was Chief Executive of Skye & Lochalsh Enterprise for 6 years. He was also a co-opted director of the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust for 6 years.

Lorne brings business and community skills to the board, together with experience of project development. Some years ago, he undertook a Winston Churchill Fellowship study visit to the Atlantic Islands of Canada, where he was able to get an insight in to an international perspective on economic development in island communities. He is a member of the Loch Carnan Working Group, and is keen to see this fantastic project brought to fruition.

Lorne is also a voluntary board member of Community Land Scotland, the body representing the interests of community landowners in Scotland.

When he has some spare time, Lorne enjoys hillwalking, genealogy and gardening.

Ronald MacKinnon – Director

    Elected in May 2009.
Working Groups – Lochboisdale Regeneration Project

Ronnie was born in Askernish, South Uist and joined the motor trade in Glasgow after leaving school. He returned to South Uist in 1971 and worked for Hydro Electric until he retired in 1997. He is married to Rachel and they have a family of 5 with 3 grandchildren – sad to say they are all live off the island.

Ronnie has previously served as local councillor and is currently Chair of South Uist Livestock Mart, Lochboisdale Community Council, Southend Community Hall and Western Isles Licensing Forum. He is also involved in a number of other committees and community groups.

Ronnie has always fully supported the community buyout of South Uist Estate and the formation of Stòras Uibhist. As he is involved in so many other committees, Ronnie feels he is in a good position to know what the people would like to happen on the Islands

Steven MacAulay – Director

    Elected in June 2010
Working Groups – Housing, Future Projects

Colin Morrison – Director

    Elected in June 2011
Working Groups – Estate Management & Crofting

Colin was born and brought up in Gerinish in South Uist. After serving his apprenticeship and working for nearly twenty-five years as a vehicle fitter at the Hebrides Range, he joined Scottish Fuels at the Lochcarnan depot where he is presently employed.

Outside of work, Colin’s interests lie predominantly in crofting activities. He and his wife and sons manage the crofts which comprise a gerd of suckler cows, a flock of sheep and sizeable arable aspect.

Colin joined the SnBM Baord to ensure the interests of crofters are fully reflected. He would like to see the estate area and habitat managed effectively to the full benefit of the vitally important crofting community.

Huw Francis – Chief Executive

Working Groups – Lochboisdale Regeneration Project, Housing, Askernish & Tourism, Communication/PR, Estate Management & Crofting, Grogarry Lodge, Fishing, Future Projects

Huw Francis was born and grew up in West Wales. He graduated in Engineering from Cranfield University and gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management from Central Connecticut State University.
