The Board of Directors of Stòras Uibhist is made up of seven democratically elected Directors and one appointed Director.
All Directors are non-executive and are elected for a set period and a rolling process of elections to allow for new Directors and re-election of existing Directors is built into the Memorandum and Articles of the company. The Directors are responsible for setting company policy and deciding on the priority development activities.
The Chief Executive was appointed by the Board, is responsible for all day–to-day matters and has full executive responsibility for running the company.

He is married to Fiona and they have one daughter and a son. He is an active crofter.
Sarah MacEachen – Director
- Re-elected in May 2009

Sarah was brought up in South Uist and returned to live here after spending 10 years away. Following graduation from Aberdeen University with a degree in Gaelic Studies she spent time working in Inverness and Dublin. She is currently working as Curriculum Officer with Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig and is based in South Uist.
Sarah comes from a crofting background and is involved in several local community organisations and can often be heard on BBC Radio nan Gaidheal.
Sarah joined the Board of Stòras Uibhist as she was (and is) acutely aware of the challenges facing the community and sees the community buyout as a significant opportunity to tackle and address these issues.
George MacAulay – Director
- Re-elected in May 2009
- Working Groups – Askernish & Tourism
George is a member of Benbecula Community Council and Balivanich crofter.
Lorne MacLeod – Co-opted Director
- Re-appointed June 2011
- Working Groups – Lochcarnan Community Wind Farm
Lorne was born in Oban where he now stays, although he previously lived in Skye, Mull, Lochaber, Caithness, and Inverness.
Lorne is a Chartered Accountant specialising in working with charities and community businesses. He is the director of a retail & distribution business based in Skye, and a board member of Cal Mac Ferries Limited.
Lorne was previously the Director of Strengthening Communities at Highlands & Islands Enterprise, and prior to that was Chief Executive of Skye & Lochalsh Enterprise for 6 years. He was also a co-opted director of the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust for 6 years.
Lorne brings business and community skills to the board, together with experience of project development. Some years ago, he undertook a Winston Churchill Fellowship study visit to the Atlantic Islands of Canada, where he was able to get an insight in to an international perspective on economic development in island communities. He is a member of the Loch Carnan Working Group, and is keen to see this fantastic project brought to fruition.
Lorne is also a voluntary board member of Community Land Scotland, the body representing the interests of community landowners in Scotland.
When he has some spare time, Lorne enjoys hillwalking, genealogy and gardening.
Ronald MacKinnon – Director
- Elected in May 2009.
- Working Groups – Lochboisdale Regeneration Project

He is married to Rachel and they have a family of 5 with 3 grandchildren – sad to say they are all live off the island.
Ronnie has previously served as local councillor and is currently Chair of South Uist Livestock Mart, Lochboisdale Community Council, Southend Community Hall and Western Isles Licensing Forum. He is also involved in a number of other committees and community groups.
Ronnie has always fully supported the community buyout of South Uist Estate and the formation of Stòras Uibhist. As he is involved in so many other committees, Ronnie feels he is in a good position to know what the people would like to happen on the Islands

- Elected in June 2010
- Working Groups – Housing, Future Projects
Colin Morrison – Director
- Elected in June 2011

Outside of work, Colin’s interests lie predominantly in crofting activities. He and his wife and sons manage the crofts which comprise a gerd of suckler cows, a flock of sheep and sizeable arable aspect.
Colin joined the SnBM Baord to ensure the interests of crofters are fully reflected. He would like to see the estate area and habitat managed effectively to the full benefit of the vitally important crofting community.
